The Morning Cast Long Shadows

A Poem Based on a photo by Tomas Sennett, Untitled 1985

The morning light cast long shadows

This morning light cast long,
Calm shadows
On your sleeping face,
I see all that I love
Before your eyes open
That mouth
I loved to kiss,
Still now,
Peaceful,
Pure,
Quiet,
A content expression,
Happiness you feel,
Your heart lighted,
Free from me,

I long to hold you here,
In this peace,
Free from truths
You laid to waste
The night before
You wake
With angry eyes,
Closed now,
Soon to open,
Refusing to see
Anything good in me,
All my shortcomings
Laid out
Like your packed bags,

You sleep soundly in my boxers,
Your needles,
Laid out in arms reach,
Scattered on the table
Like the words
You threw
My records
At the wall
At me,
You will leave
With my ring,
Off
To him
Or away
To her,

Legs splayed out in gesture,
Like a dancer,
Long legs
That pulled me close
While making love
And will carry you
Away from me
To another
To pull them close
While making love.
